Commitment

by Cris

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way.”

William Hutchinson Murray

For climbers the real ascent starts when they commit themselves to the journey ahead, months before they even set their sights on their chosen summit.  Getting to the top is but a final leg of a journey that has taken them meticulous preparation in making sure that they have all what they need, in order to achieve their goal. They surely would not succeed if, from the beginning of their adventure right to the very last step, when they emerge victorious at the summit, lacked commitment.  Commitment is the glue that keeps all together particularly when the dream seems to have been shattered.  It is what keeps the momentum alive.

Likewise in life, setting your gaze forward into the future after your goals would not be enough if you are not committed to getting there. Between goal setting and taking action you must stay committed.

Goal setting is like pinpointing the coordinates in the map of life where you see yourself in the future. However, in order to get to your desired destination you need momentum.

Please bear in mind that the sun will most likely not shine on your journey all the time.  Like any climber, as you seek your peak you must be prepared for the changes that lay ahead. You will most likely be faced with blizzards where you will feel like you are pushing yourself against all the odds.

The important thing to consider is when you set yourself the task of going after what you desire, despite Providence moving things along in your favour, you will, nevertheless, be faced with obstacles. Therefore you have to remain 100% on track and be prepared for any eventuality, so as soon as the tough gets going you simply do not just turn around and let go of what you are seeking.

Yes, maybe it will be necessary for you to take stock of the circumstances that are making your journey difficult and maybe even force you to return to base camp but, if you are totally focused on your goal you will simply regroup, wait for favorable conditions and try once more or as many times as it takes before you reach your summit.

The important point to remember is that there will be good and bad days throughout your endeavor. It is a fact of life. As you take the first step on your journey keep a diary.  This is important.

You will be noting the steps that you are taking and create lists of all the tasks that you are implementing. So if you learn how to use FTP or if you redirect an email, all these tasks are recorded for future reference, so that next time you need to carry out the same task you do not need to fumble around.  These will be your processes.

You can rely on these as memory aids and to speed the implementation of future similar tasks. Moreover, as and if you scale up your operation, you can also pass this information to other team members or freelancers in order to fasten their learning curve.

As you keep a diary, you are also making a record of your “psychological weather conditions”. Those days that will be bleak and you totally missed your target; these will be your blizzards.  On these days you simply accept the fact that you were hampered along your path.  But in the following days the clear sky will return and you will be able to resume your course.

Maintain a resilient attitude open to the fact that success will become a reality but the path will not always be smooth.  Every problem, every obstacle that you will encounter is simply letting you know that you have a knowledge gap and that this is an opportunity for you to learn and grow.

Thus, if you stick through and find the solution to whatever is causing you the blockage, it will take you to the next level and you will never have to be stuck again on that same problem.  Because your awareness and knowledge base would have been expanded and if you face the same obstacles again, you will know how to tackle them successfully.

For example, when you start online, you might not know how to host your WordPress blog in your own domain.  You might not even know how to register your own domain.  However, if you persevere and figure out how to carry out these tasks and make a record along the way on how you accomplished these, you will never be stuck again when you want to carry out the same tasks in the future.  And, thus you edge forward, task after task until your successful business is ticking along smoothly.
