Practice operating outside your comfort zone.

by Cris

Humans, as a general rule, are pleasure seeking individuals. Most of the time our choices are based on pain avoidance versus pleasure seeking.

However, the fact is that in our ordinary pursuit of what makes us feel good, we sacrifice the possibility to become extraordinary.

The truth is that most of the things that we truly desire lay outside the reach of our cravings for our immediate gratification and comfort zone. It is this quest for pleasure which sees us addicted to food; nicotine or alcohol and even drugs, rather than pursuing a long term strategy in search of a healthy alternative.  Even when we want a healthier body or a healthier lifestyle the call for the quick pleasurable fix is too great to be ignored.

However, this does not only happen with our health but also with other areas of our life.  For example, we long for wealth, however, are we prepared to face the discomfort of what it takes in order to make it happen? Do we push through our comfort zone? Are we really prepared to leave the safe environment of our seating boxes and step into the arena to face our obstacles like gladiators carving a path to victory?

Most often people do not carry out what they have to do on a daily basis on the pursuit of their goals simply because some, if not most of the tasks that they have to carry out, involve pain or discomfort of some kind.

However, this pain avoidance is quite detrimental not only to their success, happiness but also and most importantly to their health. So the learning curve required to get to grips with your WordPress blog gets neglected.  It is too hard.  Maybe some other day.  That course bought only yesterday is too “complicated”.  It is not what I expected.  I was hoping for step-by-step instructions.  Someone to hold my hand, sort of speak.  PPC, GoogleAdsense, XsitePro too much hassle to get to get with grips with.

Tomorrow, maybe.

Whilst your dream to work for yourself, fades into the distant.

The fact is that in order to savour the fresh nectar of life, you most likely will get stung along the process. But it is worth it. In fact, let me clarify this, in case you feel like stopping to read right at this moment.

You do not have to get stung at all but endure the discomfort that is required in order for you to reach your summit.

It is not my intention to scare you, but the reality is that you must be prepared to reach past your pleasure zone and endure “comfortlessness” in order to reach your goals worth reaching. The ones that really make a difference.

In the words of Joseph Addison the English essayist and politician The important question is not what will yield to man a few scattered pleasures, but what will render his life happy on the whole amount.

What will your life bestow you if you constantly succumb to your appetite for short term gratification?

It is a fact for example, that if it is a leaner body that you are after, you have to be prepared to accept you cannot simply view food as a comfort substitute.  You also need to be prepared to get up from the warmth of your sofa, put your trainers on and visit the gym or go to your local park for a jog.

Does the thought of public speaking grip you with fear?  Would you like to be able to speak in front of an audience to further your career or spread your message?

Well guess what?

By avoiding the opportunity to do so and by backing up into your comfort zone you will never be able to prove to yourself that you can.

Therefore, be prepared to accept the initial discomfort that you might have to go through, in order for you to be able to stand in front of an audience and be able to speak.

I, for example, with just the thought of being in front of any group of people even at social gatherings filled me with dread.  So much so, I even avoided going to social events so that I would not have to face the possibility that I would have to talk to a few people let alone to a group.

So the thought of having to speak to an audience, where I would have the spotlight shinning on me left me really cold.

I had an option: I could go on forever avoiding situations where I would have to talk in front of people, but deep down I knew that I was shortchanging my prospect of a full life.

My decision was to get out of my comfort zone.

Thus I joined Toastmasters. Initially, it felt as uncomfortable as it could get, not because of the environment provided by Toastmasters or even by the other members and guests that joined the meetings, they were great. It was because of the distorted view that I had about public speaking and because of my attitude about pain and discomfort.

However, I then came across something that transformed my life and would like to recommend it to you.

So if you would like to know how to persist despite of discomfort, pain, inconvenience, in your path towards your desired life?

Stay tuned for my next blog.

Hi Chris,

Great looking blog and very focused; good job.

I think stepping out of your comfort zone is either a given or must be self taught.

If a given, we see it everyday in people who are “Different”

They may be very successful, flamboyant or even seem like failures or weird for lack of better word.

I believe these are people dance to their own song, not anyone else’s.

If self taught (Forced), once you step out side of your comfort zone and realize you are ok and still breathing, it can become easier, not all the time but most of the time and you can build from there.

Good thought provoking post Chris, keep up the good work.

Cheers,
Alan
